Thurness Cocker Spaniels

Thurness Cocker Spaniels have been established for over 25 years and is a small select Kennel of solid English Cocker Spaniels. These wonderful dogs make super family pets as well as looking beautiful. They are equaly happy curled up either beside you or by the fireside or up on the hills on a 15 mile hike! These days I am kept busy either grooming other peoples beloved pets, getting my own ready for the occasional show or playing with a new litter of puppies, amongst other day to day things.

I began grooming at approximately 10 years of age on my Minature poodle. At that tender age I was sick of my beloved dog coming back from the groomer with cuts on him as well as long ends and thought I could do a better job. Within a year I was clipping my friends dogs as well.  Several years later and I had a very old poodle who was regularly being painted  as well as groomed while I studied wildlife illustration at art college.

It was when I first aquired  a cocker spaniel that I really got involved with grooming. I decided to start showing a daughter of my first cocker and it was then that I learnt to pay attention to details and had to learn some more grooming techniques. Hand stripping  a cocker spaniel is an art in itself ,as well as scissoring a poodle into shape. One thing led to another and soon I was grooming dogs from people who had stopped me in the street asking who groomed my dogs?

My love of dogs and showing them has led me to the conclusion that there is no reason why a dog has to be badly groomed and there is a style that will suit both dog and owner. All to often I get phone calls from disappointed owners asking if I can fix their newly groomed dog’s coat. Lets be honest , if you bought a pedigree dog it was because you like the look of that breed so why let it be groomed so that it looks like another breed all together?

Amy has a large fan club and with her ever wagging tail and wonderful nature she is proving herslf to be a star in the show ring as well as a excellent junior handling dog for my daughter. At present she is taking a wee rest from the show ring while she has her first litter to Claramand Black Grouce at Thurness.

Occasionally I may have an older girl available for a loving retirement home. These ex show dogs make wonderful pets and are ideal for someone who is looking for a dog that has got past the puppy stage and is a bit more sensible.

Thurness Houdini's Dream, qualified for Crufts at his first Championship show. 1999-2009 sadly missed.
